Music 
We believe that a solid commitment to the arts, including Music, offers a means through which all children, irrespective of their academic ability, specific learning needs, domestic circumstances or cultural background, can find joy, fulfilment and a route to a lifetime of participation in the arts.
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At Woodlands Primary school, the music education aims to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of Music and their talent as musicians, increasing their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with Music, allowing them to compose and listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Our Vision of Music
IntentOur vision of the Arts and the value we place in them enables pupils to reach their full potential, allowing them to become socially, morally, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and culturally integrated members of society. As the Arts stimulate creativity and imagination, they provide a unique way of understanding and responding to the world, equipping children with a better knowledge of the world they live in and enabling them to communicate their experiences. We provide many opportunities for all children to create, play, perform, and develop the skills necessary to appreciate a wide variety of art forms. Through experiencing the Arts, children are given the opportunity to enhance their creativity, self-esteem and confidence in a challenging and collaborative environment.
We aim to equip pupils with cultural capital, preparing children with the essential technical knowledge and skills for what comes next. The exploration of new skills and experiences helps to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity. Through this journey, children develop new forms of cultural capital that make a difference in individual mindsets, which consequently shapes their future.
Implementation
The national curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate Music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians.
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose Music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how Music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
Impact
By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
Coronavirus 2020/2021
A dual curriculum approach following the school closure in March 2020 and January 2021 ensured that Music continued to be delivered in a way that reflected the subject’s vision and approach to learning.
I Rock
Children at Woodlands have the opportunity to form their own rock bands, learn an instrument which they practise each week and then take part in an end of term concert. Take a look at some of their work so far!
