Governors 2023/2024

THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNING BODY

As governors at Woodlands School we work with the Headteacher, Miss Woode, to ensure that Woodlands delivers a good quality education.  The headteacher is responsible for day-to-day management;  the governors set the aims and policies for the school.

Governors have three main roles:

  • To provide strategic direction for the school
  • To act as a critical friend to the head teacher
  • To ensure accountability

We also carry out a number of other important duties, which include:

  • Determining how the school's budget is spent
  • Appointing the headteacher and deputy head
  • Forming policy on the school's curriculum and collective worship
  • Setting policies and standards for pupils' behaviour and discipline
  • Making sure the school environment is welcoming and safe
  • Setting and monitoring implementation of the school's aims and policies

The full GB meets each half-term.  It appoints committees which are able to look at issues in more detail; at present we have two committees, Finance and Premises and Curriculum and Personnel.

OUR GOVERNING BODY

Chair of Governors: Tracey Page - Appointed 11/3/21

Tracey Page:  I am a Co-opted Governor and have been on the Woodlands Governing Body for approx. 2 years. I have 2 grown up children who attended Woodlands and I served as a parent governor at Woodlands for nearly 10 years and I also was a parent governor at Hertswood for 6 years. I now have grandchildren who are due to start school in the next year. In my business life I worked for Ford Credit for over 32 years and my roles included managing project and department budgets; Office manager; Compliance adherence;  plus many more roles. This I believe gives me a foundation to support the school in decisions to those things  that are not necessarily educational related and need a business perspective. That being said, l am wherever possible attending the relevant course which support safeguarding children and other appropriate school governor training. Being a school governor enables me to use my experience to support our local community and provide assistance to Woodlands, which I truly believe is great school in our town.

No pecuniary interests have been declared.

Vice Chair of Governor:  Margaret Kamu

Margaret Kamau: I have been a parent governor since November 2018. I am a mum of two children at Woodlands and I manage an office at Finchley. I enjoy my role as a school governor and am learning a lot from the experience. I keep up to date with governor training mainly at Modern governor Herts for Learning website which has lots of courses. I enjoy the challenges that being a governor brings and being a parent at the school gives me the opportunity to express my thoughts from a parent point of view.  Re-appointed 20/10/22.

No pecuniary interests have been declared.

Other Governors:

Sophie Perkins: My name is Sophie Perkins, I am a parent governor and have been for 1 year.   My son is currently at the school, he joined in year 1 and is now in year 3.  I plan to send my daughter when she is old enough. I have always worked within education starting as a teaching assistant in a secondary school supporting children with emotional, social and developmental needs. I then moved into early years and progressed to manager. I have a wealth of knowledge in the early years and gained Early Years Teacher Status in 2014. My background contributes to the school supporting early years and understanding some of the requirements that cross over into school such as moderation, supporting development of staff and children, use of pupil premium, developing policy and procedures, being a designated safeguarding lead and over seeing SENCO for my own setting.  Being a parent at the school gives me the opportunity to express my thoughts from a parent point of view and wanting the best for our children. Re-appointed 20/10/22.

No pecuniary interests have been declared.

Ian Smith - Co-opted Governor as of 20/10/22.  I have been a Governor at Woodlands School since 2007, joining at a time when my 2 sons were in Reception and Year 5.  They thrived at Woodlands, receiving the best quality of education in a caring and nurturing environment; both going on to Hertswood Academy with Woodlands staff supporting them all the way, providing a strong educational foundation.  My eldest son is due to start his Masters In Engineering at York University and my youngest son is preparing for his A Levels at Hertswood Academy in 2021 and .  I moved to Borehamwood with my wife Julie in 1998 and am the owner of my own Plumbing & Heating Business.    Both of us enjoyed being involved with the WSSPA PTA fundraising events so it was a fantastic opportunity to join the Governing body, where I have gained invaluable knowledge in Educational matters and have used my experience both as an ex Woodlands parent and as an Engineer to support and challenge the school with a view to getting the best outcomes for the children.
